You. Are. Enough. And you should tell yourself that every. single. day.
Of course, there are things that you should tell yourself daily; and those things are daily affirmations designed to get you through the toughest situations (horrible bosses, annoying co-workers, a now-ex who insists he’s keeping the dog …) and life’s sweetest moments (a thank-you bonus from your boss for landing an account, your accountant informing you that you’re getting a tax refund this year…).
We all know that The Midlife is tough, whether you’re approaching it or fully entrenched in its grasp. Each day brings new awareness: waking up to a new strand of grey, or, perhaps, something a bit more complex, like being handed a pink slip because your boss feels that your department needs a fresher younger approach.
Regardless of what the day brings, one thing’s certain: you have to face it. Every morning, you have to look at yourself in the mirror and decide whether you’re going to tackle or muddle through everything that’s coming your way.
The question is: what do you tell yourself, every day, in order to get through it all? When you look at yourself in the mirror — freshly scrubbed, eager, and ready for an early start at the office, or rolling in after another Sunday morning walk of shame — what do you tell yourself in order to keep going?
Daily affirmations are, if you partake in them, one of life’s treasures. They’re how we push through the tough times, get through the roughest patches, how we celebrate our achievements and, deservedly, pat ourselves on the back after a job well done.
Case in point: the tough times…say…getting dumped and having to tell — not convince — yourself that you are beautiful, smart, funny… That your now-ex is a fool… Yes, someone else will come along and sweep you all the way off your stilettoed feet.
Or how about being passed over for a well-deserved promotion? You tell yourself that you are talented, driven, hard-working, and a serious asset to the company… If your boss can’t see that, then… Of course, I assume you’re telling yourself all these fabulous things while updating your LinkedIN profile, right?
Daily affirmations also work when you’re “up”. Say… you master your winged eyeliner ON THE FIRST TRY (a small thing, but this, as we all know, is no easy feat). So… After you’ve finished throwing yourself a parade down Madison Avenue/Yonge Street/all through Piccadilly Circus, perhaps you needn’t say anything at all; perhaps a simple pat on the back is enough. Yes, sometimes it’s, as they say, the little things.
At the end of the day, you are in control of the internal message you need to put your best – or any foot – forward, and when it comes to your personal sense of wellness and well-being, positivity goes a long, long way.
Perhaps now is the perfect time for you to grab a mirror and think of something to celebrate, so that you can tell yourself how amazing you are.
Go on. I’ll wait.
Let every hair flip be fabulous.
XOXO,
Le Snobbery
